How to Write a Directory Description That Gets Clicks
Your directory listing is a "mini-landing page." You have 3 seconds and 200 characters to convince a stranger to click.
If you write: "We provide world-class software solutions for business." -> 0 clicks. If you write: "Automate your payroll in 5 minutes with AI." -> Clicks.
Here is the copywriting formula for directory descriptions that convert.
The Format: Hook + Value + Keyword
1. The Hook (First 5 words)
Start with a verb or a problem.
- Bad: "Our platform is a tool that..."
- Good: "Stop wasting time on..." or "Generate leads faster..."
2. The Value (The "Wiifu")
"What's In It For Us?" (WIIFU). Don't describe features. Describe outcomes.
- Feature: "We have a SOC-2 compliant dashboard." (Boring)
- Outcome: "Enterprise-grade security for your data." (Better)
3. The SEO Keyword (Natural Integration)
If you want to rank for "Video Editor," use that phrase once. Reference your main category naturally.
Template: The "Problem-Solver"
"Struggling with [Problem]? [Product Name] helps [Target Audience] achieve [Outcome] without [Pain Point]."
Example: "Struggling with low open rates? MailFlow helps agencies increase email engagement by 50% without spam filters."
Mistakes to Avoid
- Written in 3rd Person: "The company was founded in 2022..." No one cares. Speak to the user.
- Wall of Text: Use short sentences.
- All Caps: DO NOT SHOUT.
Testing Your Description
Write 3 versions before you submit to TapJoin.
- The Direct Pitch: "The #1 tool for..."
- The Benefit Pitch: "Save 10 hours a week..."
- The Curiosity Pitch: "The secret way to..."
Pick the one that makes you want to click.
