How to Keep a Conversation Going (And Not Be Boring)
You sent a great opener. They replied.
Then... awkward silence. The conversation dies.
Sound familiar? Here is how to keep conversations alive.
Why Conversations Die
1. One-Word Answers
If you reply with "lol" or "nice," you're killing the conversation.
2. Interview Mode
Question. Answer. Question. Answer. It's exhausting.
3. Running Out of Things to Say
You didn't prepare for what comes after "hi."
The SECRET Framework
S - Share Something About Yourself
Don't just ask questions. Offer information about yourself too.
Bad: "What do you do for work?" Better: "I'm in marketing—mostly writing. What about you? What keeps you busy?"
E - Expand on Their Answers
Don't move to the next topic too fast. Dig deeper.
Them: "I love hiking." Bad: "Cool. What else do you like?" Better: "Nice! What's the best trail you've done? I'm always looking for new spots."
C - Create Callbacks
Reference something they said earlier. It shows you're paying attention.
Them (earlier): "I'm obsessed with Italian food." You (later): "Speaking of Italian food—have you tried that pasta place downtown?"
R - React Authentically
Show emotion. Don't be a robot.
- "Haha that's hilarious 😂"
- "Wait, that happened??"
- "Honestly, same. I felt that."
E - End with an Open Question
Keep the ball in their court with something easy to answer.
- "What about you?"
- "Have you tried that?"
- "What do you think?"
T - Take Breaks (Don't Overload)
You don't need to reply in 30 seconds. Let the conversation breathe.
Avoid These Mistakes
| Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|
| Only asking questions | Share your own experiences too. |
| One-word replies | Add context or a follow-up question. |
| Changing topics too fast | Go deeper before moving on. |
| Being too formal | Relax. Use emojis. Be human. |
| Oversharing immediately | Save heavy topics for later. |
When to Move to Voice/Video
Text has limits. If you've been chatting for a while:
"I'm enjoying this convo! Would you be down for a quick voice call sometime?"
Voice/video builds connection faster than text ever will.
Sample Flowing Conversation
You: "What's your go-to weekend activity?" Them: "Honestly, I'm usually at coffee shops with a book." You: "I respect that! What are you reading right now?" Them: "This thriller called [Book]. It's wild." You: "I've heard of it! I'm more into sci-fi myself, but I might give it a shot. Any coffee shop recs?"
See how it flows? No interviews. Just natural back-and-forth.
